Year 5 – Spring Term
In year 5 we will be learning through the topics of Antarctica and the Arctic circle, The life cycle of a plant and Ancient Greece. The first half of the term we will be focus on Antarctica and the Arctic Circle as well as the life cycle of a plant. As part of our science topic we have an exciting visit to Barnes Wetlands planned. The following half term we will be looking at the Ancient Greeks and their influence within the modern world. We will be referring to this within our Art topic developing an understanding of artists through history.
In Maths we will continue to work through the National Curriculum with an ever greater focus on using and applying mathematics to real life contexts in order to solve problems.
In our English lessons will we will be referring to a number of texts within specific genres in order to help children to develop their writing style through focusing on building a richer vocabulary and making use of a variety of writing features and text types. These include balanced arguments, poetry, instructions, report writing and story writing.
PE will be taught on Thursday mornings, please continue to ensure that PE kits are in school (and labelled appropriately). We will be continuing with our swimming lessons on a Monday afternoon. All children are expected to bring the correct kit including a swimming cap which can be purchased from the swimming pool at a cost of £5.00.
Homework will continue to be set on Thursdays and is due back on Tuesdays. Homework includes daily home reading and spelling words from the Year 5 and 6 National Curriculum list. Please ensure your child practices their spellings daily.
