 Year 6 – Spring Term

In year 6 we will be learning through the topic of ‘the Victorians’. The first half of the term will have a science focus, looking at specifically light and electricity and learning more about scientists such as Isaac Newton. We will also be investigating and making traditional, Victorian toys. The following half term will have a history focus and we will be learning about Victorian Britain.

In Maths we will continue to work through the National Curriculum with an ever greater focus on using and applying mathematics to real life contexts in order to solve problems. We will also focus on mathematical topics including statistics and working with data, algebra and geometry.

Our English lessons will, often through our topic of ‘the Victorians’, help children to develop their writing style through focusing on building a richer vocabulary and making use of a variety of writing features over a number of genres and text types. These include balanced arguments, poetry, instructions and, of course, good old story writing!

As is it the last full term before the children take their SATs tests, there will be a big focus on the more traditionally ‘academic’ subjects (reading, writing and maths). Even though we will be working hard in this respect, we will aim to keep a healthy balance in relation to the rest of the school’s curriculum.

PE will be taught on Wednesday mornings, please continue to ensure that PE kits are in school (and labelled appropriately) on those days. We will no longer be swimming this term.

Homework will continue to be set before the weekend and is due back on Tuesdays. Homework includes daily home reading and learning spelling words and rules.
