WEEK BEGINNING 18/05/20

MONDAY

Hi, Year 6.  To those of you who were waiting for the Shell Shockers code on Friday, I can only apologise.  I totally lost track of what day it was!  I usually set my alarm to remind me, but forgot to do this too.  Slapped wrist for me!

WRITING

Today we will be starting to write our own balanced argument for the following title:

Should schools reopen on the 1st June?

For the first stage of the writing you need to do some thinking.  I need you to write down a "for" and "against" list in your workbooks.  Research on the internet if you need to and don't forget to ask a parent what they think about it.  Once you have written your lists, decide which two arguments "for" and two arguments "against" you want to use in your own piece of writing.  We will be following the same shape as we did for the "Learning during Lockdown" text we wrote together.

Here is the shape again...

Balanced Argument "Shape"

..and here is the complete flipchart we used for our six plot points...

WRITING

Yesterday, you should have chosen two arguments "for" and two arguments "against" opening schools on the 1st June (and Tristan, it being your birthday is NOT a good enough reason)!

Today you will need to write (or type) the first two plot points/paragraphs:

1.  The introduction:  A bit of background, introduce the problem, use of a fact.

2.  Argument 1 "for":  Your first argument "for" opening schools.

Remember to write in the present tense (usually) and the third person.  Do NOT put your personal views in - this will be the last paragraph.  Use the shape and the complete flipchart to help you structure the first two paragraphs (see Monday's writing for these two things)

Friday

Hi, me sixes! Last day of this half-term - it has flown by!  Enjoy your break from some school work for a week (you deserve it).  Look out for news about schools reopening!  It might be interesting to see if any of your balanced argument ideas come up...

WRITING

Yesterday, you should have finished the balanced argument "for" and "against" the reopening schools.

Today you need to proof-read what you have written, make any corrections and then publish your final version.  Remember to ask a parent to read it so that they can give you some feedback.  You could rewrite it or type it - it's up to you!  If you want to, you can send it to me (or Miss Molloy) by emailing it to admin@bourne.hillingdon.sch.uk. Just make sure you make it clear which teacher it is for and it will be forwarded to the correct place.

MONDAY

Hello, Year 6.  Hope you had a good half-term.  Online learning will continue here.  The year 6 staff are back in school today getting the school ready for your return.  We will continue to put learning online, but it may not be as detailed as previously due to time restraints.  We will do our best.

Thank you to Haroon and Eliana who sent me their balanced arguments.  These are great...have a read yourselves!

WRITING

We will be starting a new writing project in school next week, so there seems little point starting a new genre online at the moment.  We will be looking at detective stories, doing our own bit of investigation and writing a crime report including transcripts of interviews with suspects.  It should be good fun!

What I would like you to do this week (and spread this out over the week) is to write about your experiences during lockdown.  Think about your thoughts and feelings.  What you have enjoyed and what you have not enjoyed.  Write about the kinds of things you have been doing.  Or anything other experiences during these unprecedented times.  You could even include photos/illustrations, but only if you want to!

I would like you to write a little bit each day so that by Friday it is completed - it should be about a page long.  Ideally, you will be able to read this out to your "bubble" when you return to school next week!

Did you know there is a cool trick for percentages that can sometimes be used to make a question easier.  For example:  28% of 50 can be changed to 50% of 28 which is easier to answer!  50% (or half) of 28 is 14.  So, 28% of 50 is also 14.

Have a go at these questions using this "trick"!
